Sept. 27 - Oct. 22

Jan Breydelstraat 5, Ghent
Oct. 27, 2017 - Mar. 18, 2018
designmuseumgent.be

opinion of the jury:
“How do you introduce the human aspect in technology? How do you marry man and machine? What are the boundaries of authorship and intellectual property in a world full of copies? These are some of the critical questions Unfold aims to integrate in their work. They break with traditional design methods and often engage in ambitious collaborations.”
Marie Pok, director CID Grand-Hornu

“Unfold challenges the classical roles of the designer, author, producer and consumer. They succeed in interweaving craft knowledge and new technologies in a pragmatic and critical way.”
Katrien Laporte, director Design Museum Gent

“The techniques, materials and conceptual approach of Unfold are different than those of industrial designers. Claire and Dries perfectly embody the spirit of times: In search of innovation in 3D technologies, without loosing the human aspect”
Dieter Van den Storm, coordinator Biennale Interieur

Unfold/Recollected solo at Gallery Valerie Traan

date

April 22nd 2016
Unfold is pleased to invite you to come and see Unfold/Recollected, a solo show at Gallery Valerie Traan in Antwerp, Belgium.

With RECOLLECTED, Unfold is showing its body of work from a different angle. The Antwerp-based design studio is best known for their conceptual installations that bring stories about new ways of making, manufacturing, appropriation and distributing in a digital age. The objects taking part in these installations - vases, tableware, jugs - are props used for telling the bigger story. But in UNFOLD/RECOLLECTED, these props become the protagonists. Arranged on a handful of custom made trays, the different objects are starting to connect to each other, new families are composed and other stories unfold.

Featuring projects in collaboration with Materialise, Charlie Stern, Barnabé Fillion, Lucas Maassen and Sons & Arthur Hoffner.

22.04.2016 - 05.06.2016
Opening drink: Friday April 22, 4-9pm

Unfold+Materialise present Skafaldo at Milan Salone 2016

date

April 8th 2016
For Milan Design Week 2016, the institutions that support and promote Belgian design have joined forces with the international contemporary culture magazine DAMN° to present Belgian Matters at Palazzo Litta: an exhibition featuring the results of pairings between 13 designers and companies from Belgium. Each project has been commissioned especially for the event and will be seen for the first time during the Salone.

Unfold collaborated with Materialise, an international leader in additive manufacturing or 3D printing. Called upon by diverse clients across the world, from industry to artists, it’s renowned for its software to operate 3D-printers. Unfold wanted to spotlight a hidden gem in Materialise’s arsenal by working with their eStage software, a solution to automatically generate so called support structures that are used in Stereolithography (curing liquid resin with a laser). These light weight geometric structures are normally printed together with the actual object in order to support it during the process, but removed afterwards and discarded as waste.

Fascinated by their aesthetic inherent to the process -very utilitarian but also reminiscent of neo-gothic industrial architecture and the work of Bernd & Hilla Becher- Unfold turned things around and made them the distinct feature of a side-table and bowl.

Simple shapes were fed into Materialise’s eStage software, the generated support structures subsequently 3D-printed and cast in bronze by Factum Arte, using a cutting edge process. The actual digital 3D designs that were used to generate the support structures were never printed. In turn they have been re-created in more traditional materials by means of glass blowing at Ajeto Glassworks and CNC wood milling by Modelmakerij Van Gerwen.

Skafaldo will be presented at the Milan Design Week 2016 as a part of Belgian Matters, an exhibition concept conceived by Siegrid Demyttenaere on behalf of DAMN° for Belgium is Design.
Belgian Matters takes part in the group event A Matter of Perception: Tradition & Technology at the Palazzo Litta.

A Matter of Perception: Tradition & Technology
Palazzo Litta, Corso Magenta 24, Milan

Unfold wins Henry van de Velde Award for Young Talent

date

January 9th 2015
It's official! We are extremely honoured to announce that Unfold has won the prestigious Henry van de Velde Award for Young Talent!

Design Flanders -the government organisation who promotes contemporary, high-quality and innovative design from Flanders- has been presenting the Henry van de Velde Awards and Labels since 1994. The Awards and Labels showcase role models from the design sector and present home-grown design to the general public.

We kindly invite you to come to the award ceremony and opening of the exhibition tonight jan. 9th in the BOZAR museum in Brussels. The exhibition features the largest overview of our work ever presented side by side and we've worked very hard to pull it all together. On display are l'Artisan Électronique, Stratigraphic Manufactury, The Peddler, Of Instruments and Archetypes, Kiosk, Utanalog and a few more.

Tamar Shafrir from Space Caviar has written an excellent essay for the catalog on Unfold's "conversations between the fields of physical making and digital form-giving," it's a great read.

We hope to see you tonight, show you our work and have a toast!

new website and brand new webshop!

date

January 3rd 2015
What started as a minor update to get our website in line with the rest of Unfold's identity became a complete overhaul and rebuild. Just like the visual identity, the site was lovingly crafted by Indianen and coded by Wout. The new site might look familiar, we kept what worked well but tweaked a lot of things and added some major new sections which are now conveniently located in the top menu.
Projects still features the familiar grid with all our projects but now including project titles.  All the projects were reviewed, some removed, some consolidated and all texts and images have been double checked and expanded with new material so don't forget to check them all out again! Texts are now collapsed so we can have longer text without them taking all the space, click on the more... label next to the description to fold out all text.
Discourse replaces the old Publications grid and has a much broader scope, it presents you with everything that gives context to our work. This material can be produced by others about our own work: like books, articles, essays, films; but also includes things we do as Unfold like exhibitions we curate, talks we give, articles we write, books we edit, workshops we give etc. So don't forget to regularly check out this section. You can now also like all projects and other items on Facebook.
News section has also been added for everybody who's not following us on Facebook :). The updates won't be as frequent as the ones on Facebook, more in line with the content of our newsletter to which you can still subscribe on the Contact page (slightly hidden under the logo).
Last but not least we finally added the often requested online Shop in which you can buy all our products and limited editions straight from the Unfold printers and other production lines. Hitting the for sale sticker on the Projects grid or in a project description will take you straight to the associated product in the webshop.

Our new visual identity and website were made possible with a grant from Design Flanders.

We hope you enjoy our new website as much as we do!

Unfold in 'Out of Hand' at Museum of Arts & Design NYC

date

October 15th 2013
Unfold is pleased to let you know that two of our projects l'Artisan Électronique (2010, together with Tim Knapen) and Brainwave Sofa (2009, together with Lucas Maassen) will be part of Out of Hand: Materializing the Postdigital at MAD, Museum of Arts and Design in New York. We are honored that both projects are being recognized by MAD as being amongst the 10 highlights of the show which features more than 100 works by renowned and upcoming artists, architects and designers.

Out of Hand: Materializing the Postdigital will explore the many areas of 21st-century creativity made possible by advanced methods of computer-assisted production known as digital fabrication. In today’s postdigital world, artists are using these means to achieve levels of expression never before possible – an explosive, unprecedented scope of artistic expression that extends from sculptural fantasy to functional beauty. Out of Hand will be the first major museum exhibition to examine this interdisciplinary trend through the pioneering works of more than 80 international artists, architects, and designers, including Ron Arad, Barry X Ball, Zaha Hadid, Stephen Jones, Anish Kapoor, Allan McCollum, Marc Newson, and Roxy Paine. Represented will be some of the most compelling creations from the past decade ranging from sculpture and furniture to fashion and transport.

Organized by MAD curator Ron Labaco, Out of Hand will be on view at MAD beginning fall 2013 (October 16, 2013 to July 6, 2014).
