Vitra Design Museum

Back to the Future, essay for Vitra Design Museum

The Bauhaus was one of the 20th century’s most influential cultural movements, yet at the same time it is regarded as the epitome of the Modernist design cliché: geometric, industrial, minimalistic. The exhibition The Bauhaus #itsalldesign disproves this cliché and takes a new, up-to-date look at the design of the Bauhaus. Unfold was invited to contribute an essay to the exhibition's catalog discussing the relevance of the Bauhaus today. In Back to the Future, How tradition inspires contemporary making Unfold draws parallels between how the Bauhaus was born in an era of dramatic changes caused by industrialization and how today's designers craft new roles for themselves in response to the shifts and cracks induced by the digital era.
